The case for green jobs in the North East

In this part of the country we are well positioned to become a low carbon economy. We have deep roots in energy, science and engineering and an impressive track record in developing electric vehicle technology including the manufacture of the Nissan ‘Leaf' in Sunderland.

The National Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) in Northumberland is recognised as a world leader in research and development of sustainable energy technologies. The Tees Valley is developing as a hub for entrepreneurial activity in biofuels, environmentally sustainable methods for waste disposal and cleaner, greener manufacturing processes.

We have abundant natural resources, including water, coal reserves, an eastern seaboard location, all of which give us tremendous opportunities linked to sub-sea and marine sectors, wind and tidal power, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and underground coal gasification linked to CCS.

ANEC works with partners to promote the North East as a key location for investment in new low carbon technologies and renewable technologies that will be central to a new energy system.

National decisions on future investment in new green industries have a significant impact on our ability to realise our ambition to be a world leader in new and renewable energy industries. ANEC lobbies the Government in its decisions on future investment.
