Economic development

Local government in the North East has a strong tradition in driving economic growth and recovery and can be justly proud of promoting the positive role it plays in improving communities. The impact of the global economy and of decisions aimed at reducing the national deficit present challenges and opportunities for local government, not least in this area of the country. North East councils want the best for people and businesses and aspire to greater prosperity, are committed to creating the right conditions for economic growth and to the development of sustainable communities.

ANEC convened the Economic Development Task and Finish Group, chaired by Councillor Bob Cook, which heard evidence from a range of public and private sector organisations with a focus on the 'tools' for delivering economic growth.

These included access to finance; infrastructure: digital and broadband communications; infrastructure: transport connectivity and energy; and inward investment and promotion.
