North East Businesses to Find Out How to Make Money from Climate Change
The findings of a study looking at the economic opportunities and implications of climate change in North East England will be revealed on 11 June.
A free morning event, make money from climate change, will take place at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle and is set to share the findings of the study, commissioned by ClimateNE. It includes a cost benefit analysis of the adaptation responses required for climate change and the opportunities presented in the move to a low-carbon economy.
Cllr Paul Watson, Chair of the Association of North East Councils, which supports ClimateNE, said: "Local government in North East England is committed to working closely with ClimateNE and the business community to build on our strengths and natural assets to position us as a leader in a low carbon economic future.
"Climate change presents significant challenges; however with challenges come opportunities, such as the development of new green industries and the transition to a low carbon economy, which will bring investment, skills and jobs.
"These opportunities form an important part of our vision for a sustainable future, not only to tackle the impact of climate change, but as an integral part of our plan for economic recovery."
Andrew Sugden, Director of Membership & Policy at the North East Chamber of Commerce, said: "Climate change is both a pressing issue facing the UK and other countries around the world, and represents a genuine commercial opportunity for many businesses. This event will not only launch the findings of this key study but will also provide information and practical help for businesses on how identifying new commercial opportunities related to climate change can help their business be successful.
"There will also be information on how businesses can save money by protecting themselves from climate change risks, and cutting energy costs and carbon intensities.
"Advice will also be on hand on how to access the available grants, loans and other funds on offer to help businesses to gain maximum advantage from engaging with this agenda."
The findings of a survey on business attitudes and perceptions of climate change in North East England, which indicates the levels of current activity on the agenda will also be shared.
Speakers include: Ryan Maughan from Comesys Europe Ltd; Alice Owen from ARUP; John Pettifer from the Federation of Small Businesses, John Barton from RENEW, and John Spurr from Deloitte.
The morning will be rounded off with lunch where delegates can talk to climate change advisors and specialists, and browse exhibitions.
Confirmed exhibitors are Business Link; Business in The Community: Business Resilience & Climate Change Adaptation project; Community Energy Solutions, Elecscoot Ltd, Environment Agency, Envision, Federation of Small Businesses, National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP), North East Chambers of Commerce, RENEW, Tees Valley Green Business Network, and UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP), among others.
