Website Launched for New North East Strategy
A new website has been launched to collect evidence that will help shape the future of North East England.
The www.northeaststrategy.co.uk site is a two-way portal for members of the public, businesses, public authorities, community groups and voluntary bodies to get involved with the new integrated regional strategy and receive updates on its progress.
The region's Local Authority Leaders and Elected Mayors Board, which includes Northumberland National Park Authority, and the One North East Board are jointly responsible for drafting, implementing and monitoring the delivery of the North East Strategy. Legislation that was passed in November 2009 requires each region outside London to develop its own single strategy, encompassing the existing Regional Spatial Strategy and the Regional Economic Strategy.
Visitors to the North East Strategy website can also find out what preliminary work has been carried out so far, including:
how the strategy will affect North East England;
the consultation process and how people can get involved;
the key partners involved in developing the strategy; and
an overview of the informal stages of the North East Strategy development - including the draft North East Analytical Report.
The draft North East Analytical Report was produced by One North East, the Association of North East Councils and regional partners, and brings together evidence from across a range of policy areas as part of the evidence on which the North East Strategy will be based. The report gives a snapshot of North East England today.
The website allows visitors to submit evidence if they feel that the key messages identified in the draft analytical report need to be changed or strengthened in any way. All views and comments can be submitted using the online response form and will be collected and logged.
The North East Strategy is important for everyone who lives, works, studies or does business in North East England. It will set out how the region will become more sustainable by supporting businesses, improving skills levels, and agreeing the location of future housing and other physical developments as well as transport links. It will also describe how the region will tackle climate change and reduce carbon emissions.
In order to produce a strategy that truly represents the needs and aspirations of North East England, effective engagement and participation in developing the strategy is essential. As the strategy is developed we will ensure that a broad range of stakeholders from across the public, private and community and voluntary sectors have the opportunity to input.
