Council Leaders and Elected Mayors Support for Steel Industry on Teesside
At their meeting held on 18 December, Leaders and Elected Mayors of the 12 strategic authorities for the North East underlined their commitment to give cross-party political endorsement to do everything in their power to support efforts being made, following Corus' decision to 'mothball' the Teesside Cast Product's blast furnace at Redcar at the end of January.
Council Leaders and Elected Mayors expressed their concern at the recent announcement by Corus and the impact that this is having on workers and their families at this time, and have written to the Prime Minister and Lord Mandelson urging them to intervene to ensure that everything is done to keep the plant open.
Political leaders, whilst welcoming the recent announcement of £60 million of Government funding, agreed that all possible support was needed to provide a long term strategy for the industry in the Tees Valley and to maximise opportunities for future recovery.
