Response to the Department for Transport's aviation consultation
01 October 2011
ANEC has consistently supported the sustainable development of Newcastle International and Durham Tees Valley airports, given their importance to the economic development and competitiveness of the North East and welcomed the opportunity to offer comments and highlight issues of concern in relation to the consultation on the future of aviation.
ANEC considers that the sustainable development of the North East's airports play a crucial role in efforts to re-balance the economy and support new business growth.
The expansion of air services at regional airports is vital to ensuring more balanced growth across the country, particularly given that there is significant under-utilised capacity and relatively few constraints, by comparison with the increasingly congested London airports.
ANEC asked that the Government sought to create a fairer approach in relation to Air Passenger Duty and to both recognise and respond to the disproportionately negative effect this has on regional air services.
