Consultation Responses
UK Draft Renewable Energy Strategy - September 2008
In late 2007, the European Union set a binding target for 20% of the EU’s energy consumption to come from renewable sources by 2020. As part of this, each nation was given their own target for renewable energy by that date, to contribute towards the EU objective. The UK’s target is for 15% renewable energy by 2020, and in 2006, the UK only had 1.5% renewable energy in its mix. Current policies indicate that by 2020, this level would be 5%. Therefore a fundamental shift in policies is required.
The Draft Renewable Energy Strategy consulted on a wide range of options – across electricity, heat and transport to deliver the UK’s share of this target.
The Government emphasise that all levels of Government – central, devolved and local will have a prominent role to play in delivering these targets. In its response, the Association emphasised the work that local authorities are already undertaking on areas such as energy efficiency, and promoting renewable technologies.
Through consultation with local authorities across the region, the Association has submitted a response.
