Biography

Councillor Mick Henry is the Chair of the Association of North East Councils, the political voice for local government in the North East. He was first elected Chair in June 2005 and has been Leader of Gateshead Council since May 2002.

Born in Gateshead, Mick was first elected as a Councillor for the inner city ward of Saltwell in 1986. Within Gateshead, he is Chair of the Local Strategic Partnership and several regeneration-driven bodies.

Passionately committed to supporting and promoting the arts, creative industries and cultural diversity of the region, Mick regards culture as a driver for economic regeneration. He has been a key figure in the establishment of The Sage Gateshead, is a trustee of BALTIC, The Centre for Contemporary Art and was involved from the inception of the borough’s two most famous cultural icons, the Angel of the North and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Mick is Chair of Northumbria Police Authority. He represents Gateshead on various regional bodies, including being Vice Chair of Tyne and Wear Co-ordinating Committee, Vice Chair of Tyne & Wear Development Company and a member of the Tyne & Wear Economic Development Joint Committee. In addition, he is a lay member of the Court of Newcastle University.

Nationally, he is a Member of the Local Government Association’s General Assembly, and its Rural and Urban Commissions.

Mick was a Senior Lecturer in Photography and Head of Digital Imaging at Northumbria University and he previously held posts in most sectors of education, including class teacher in a special school. Before that, he worked in both private and public sectors, including a period as a Management Services Officer in industry and in London’s Hospital Service.

He is married with two sons and they enjoy camping and skiing.
